Portrait of Art Farmer: 180g Vinyl LP
Release date: 10 November, 2023
Acoustic Sounds and Contemporary Records present this new reissue of iconic jazz trumpet player Art Farmer’s 1958 Contemporary Records debut, Portrait of Art Farmer. Featuring Hank Jones (piano), Addison Farmer (bass) and Roy Haynes (drums) with this edition pressed on 180-gram vinyl pressed at QRP with (AAA) lacquers cut from the original tapes by Bernie Grundman. It is presented in a tip-on jacket.
Portrait of Art Farmer features performances recorded in 1958 and was Farmer’s first album released under Lester Koenig’s Contemporary Records label.
Although it was not until 1958 (the year this album was recorded) that Art Farmer was voted "New Star" of the year in the Down Beat poll, his reputation had already been established among musicians on the basis of his work with Lionel Hampton, Gigi Gryce, and Gerry Mulligan. While he’s well-known for the flugelhorn, for many years he achieved comparable lyricism as a trumpeter, as these sides reveal. With a rhythm section that includes his twin brother, the late Addison Farmer, on bass, as well as pianist Hank Jones and drummer Roy Haynes, he is heard here in three originals (two are blues), and five other appropriate vehicles such as Benny Golson’s "Stablemates." Farmer felt that this was the best album he had made at that stage in his career.
